Learning Objectives Participants will:
Summary: Lay counseling or people-helping by non-professional or paraprofessional counselors has gained even greater prominence and attention in recent years, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2023) and presently. Psy chologists, licensed mental health professionals, medical professionals, ministry leaders, and coaches must remain current and competent when integrating lay counseling with professional treatment. The mental health needs of people here in the United States and around the world have significantly increased, and there are not enough mental health professionals to provide the services needed. Singla, Schleider, and Patel (2023) recently emphasized democ ratizing access to psychological therapies by focusing on the following innovations and the role of psychologists: 1) simplifying the treatment; 2) diversifying the workforce, including task sharing in using lay counselors or nonspe cialist providers (NSPs) and peer support workers; and 3) employing digital tools. The effectiveness of lay counselors or nonspecialist providers has received even more sup port in various contexts and countries (Tan et al., 2023; see also Barbui et al., 2020; Patel et al., 2022; Singla et al., 2017; Singla et al., 2021; Singla et al., 2022).
