Defining Self While Staying Connected: Self differentiation, Spiritual Formation, and Managing Value-based Conflicts 1.25 credit hours Continuing Education Accreditations applicable to this workshop: APA, ASWB, NBCC, NAADAC, IBCC, Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling Level: Advanced Bill Buker, Ph.D. Oral Roberts University Summary Mental health professionals and ministry leaders frequently face value-based conflicts, particularly when navigating the tension between values of distinction that define personal identity and values of connection that promote empathy and rapport with others. These conflicts often arise when clients’ actions, beliefs, or identities diverge from the clinician’s sense of what is right, good, or true. Addressing these differences requires clinicians to prioritize one set of values over another or, in some cases, reevaluate their own values. This work shop examines how psychologists, licensed mental health professionals, and ministry leaders can navigate this tension through self-differentiation, worldview conflicts, and spiritual formation, emphasizing the potential for professional and personal growth that can emerge from such challenges. By exploring these complex dynamics, participants will develop greater self-awareness and practical strategies for managing value-based conflicts in the therapeutic process. Learning Objectives 1. Differentiate between the values of distinction and the val ues of connection. 2. Describe how the conflict between the values of distinc tion and the values of a connection can be managed. 3. Discuss the challenge of managing conflicts between the values of distinction and the values of connection, which can lend themselves to a formative process.

Summary Empathy goes beyond just listening—it is the profound expe rience of being deeply loved. Everyone needs empathy, but many unintentionally deflect it through emotional denial, self-judgment, or self-rejection. By developing self-empathy, individuals can embrace the empathy offered by others. This workshop designed for ministry leaders will evaluate how to receive and reflect empathy, especially for those strug gling with common mental health challenges such as worry, relational hurts, emotional triggers, anger, and compassion fatigue. Participants will describe how empathy helps clients overcome these struggles and learn to provide affective, cog nitive, and effective empathy, referred to as the PACE of em pathy. Participants will identify specific self-empathy prac tices that can overcome unconscious resistance to growth and allow clients to experience being deeply loved by God. Learning Objectives 1. Evaluate the role of empathy in addressing common men tal health challenges such as worry, relational hurts, emo tional triggers, anger, and compassion fatigue. 2. Recognize the four key components of empathy (affective, cognitive, and effective empathy, known as the PACE of em pathy) and how each contributes to emotional healing and growth. 3. Identify and practice self-empathy techniques to over come unconscious resistance to personal growth and help clients experience being deeply loved by God. 314.
