California Baptist University Summary In the past two decades, psychologists have increasingly explored the emotion of awe, both theoretically (Keltner & Haidt, 2003) and empirically (Jiang et al., 2024). While defi nitions vary, awe is typically characterized by three core elements: the experience of vastness and wonder, the in ability to assimilate this experience into existing schemas, requiring a shift in perspective, and gratitude (Bussing et al., 2018). As an emotion, awe may be evoked in response to three triggers, including cognitive (e.g., thinking about the number of stars in the Milky Way), sensory/physical (e.g., standing in front of the Statue of Liberty), and relational (e.g., witnessing an act of altruism; Keltner & Haidt, 2003). In this workshop, psychologists, licensed mental health professionals, pastors, and coaches will analyze the re search on awe as a psychological construct and how it plays a vital role in mental health, promoting greater meaning, purpose, and well-being by reducing self-preoccupation (Monroy & Keltner, 2023; Upenieks & Krause, 2022). Partici pants will also be able to identify awe’s role in therapy for promoting mental and spiritual health. Learning Objectives 1. Describe the awe literature in psychology, including defi nitions and research support for awe as a distinct psycho logical construct 2. Identify the role that awe can play in counseling and therapy for the promotion of mental and spiritual health, including common awe triggers (i.e., cognitive, physical/ sensory, relational) 3. Recognize how awe, situated within faith-based wor shipfulness and applied to all of life, can be utilized to pro mote psychological and spiritual health when working with faith-based clients in counseling and therapy
