PASTORAL CARE
i In the first chapter of Genesis, when God started cre ating the world, at the end of every day, He saw that it was “good.” On the last day, when He made us, God saw all the beauty He created and “… it was very good” (1:31, NIV). When we create beauty out of love, we conduct ourselves like the One who created us… when we start making beauty, even in brokenness, we begin to take our lives back. We are not paralyzed by fear anymore, but instead motivated by love. That is how healing happens, why art therapy works, and why people risk vulnerability to love again. Because they have seen a joy set before them that makes the cost worth it. In her poem, “The Old Astronomer to His Pupil,” Sarah Williams writes, “Though my soul may set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light; I have loved the stars too fondly to be fearful of the night.” 1 What if we loved something or someone so fondly that we didn’t fear the night? If fear has a grip on your heart, let me ask, What joy is set before you? What beauty are you ignoring? What would it look like to live by a love not led by fear? Tomorrow Needs You is not just the title of my latest book; it is a truth I believe with all my heart. The future does not need our perfection. It needs our presence. It needs us to love something so deeply that fear cannot
hold us back anymore. So let love lead. Put fear on a leash. Step into today not because you are fearless, but because you are fiercely loved. ;
