PASTORAL CARE

The Essential Role of Pastoral Care in Mental Health Support

p

Mark Mayfield, Ph.D.

Pastoral care is a fundamental aspect of spiritual and emotional support within the Church, offering a unique blend of compassion, understanding, and spiritual guidance that addresses the whole person. In a time when mental health issues are increasingly acknowledged and discussed, the role of pastors and church leaders in providing personalized care has never been more vital.

Understanding Pastoral Care Providing personalized care often involves taking the time to build personal relationships with members of the congregation. When pastors invest in getting to know their congregation on a personal level, they can

offer more meaningful and targeted support. This might include meeting regularly for one-on-one conversations, praying with individuals, or sharing Scripture and spir itual insights that directly address the person’s unique circumstances.
