John Kuhnley, M.D. American Association of Christian Counselors Light Counseling Summary Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects individuals across their lifespan, presenting unique chal lenges and opportunities for growth at every developmental stage. This session provides an in-depth exploration of “The World of the Client with ADHD,” including preschool-aged children, adolescents, adults, and their families. Participants will examine the neurobiology of ADHD and its impact on executive functioning, emotional regulation, and interper sonal relationships. Key topics include attachment theory, emotion regulation, and the role of social media in influenc ing ADHD symptoms. Special attention will be given to com mon comorbid conditions and evidence-based treatments, including both medication and non-medication approaches. Through engaging discussions and practical demonstrations, attendees will gain access to a toolbox of interventions de signed to empower both licensed mental health profession als and clients. The session aims to deepen understanding and empathy for clients with ADHD while equipping profes sional psychologists and licensed counselors with actionable strategies to support individuals and families navigating life with ADHD. Learning Objectives 1. Describe the lived experiences of individuals with ADHD from preschool through adulthood, including the unique challenges faced by their families 2. Analyze current research on brain mechanisms underlying ADHD and their implications for behavior, emotional regula tion, and attachment across the lifespan 3. Examine the impact of social media on ADHD symp toms, explore the intersection of emotion regulation, at tachment theory, and ADHD, and understand common comorbidities 4. Develop a comprehensive intervention toolbox of practi cal, evidence-based strategies for managing ADHD through medications, behavioral techniques, and holistic, family-in clusive approaches
Learning Objectives 1. Identify and describe the psychological, physiological, and spiritual impacts of race-based and generational trauma on individuals and communities, recognizing their manifesta tions in clinical settings 2. Examine ethical considerations and culturally responsive strategies, including faith-informed approaches, essential to supporting clients affected by race-based and generational trauma 3. Recovery Alive Summary Amid the most devastating drug epidemic in history, de veloping a comprehensive, church-based, Christ-centered response for connecting to and treating individuals suffer ing from substance use disorders has never been more im portant! In this pre-conference workshop, the science and symptomology of addiction will be examined and explored, along with the impact substance use has on family systems. Treatment options and strategies, including the Recov ery Alive 12-step recovery model, will be introduced with thorough instructions on how to design, launch, and grow a fully integrated recovery lay ministry within a local church or community organization. This workshop is designed for psychologists, licensed mental health professionals, coaches, and ministry leaders, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to integrate faith-based approaches into substance use disorder treatment.
