045: Navigating the Chaos: Strategies to Use with Family Members Who Have Borderline or Narcissistic Traits 3 credit hours Continuing Education Accreditations applicable to this workshop: APA, ASWB, NBCC, IBCC, Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling Level: Advanced Fred DiBlasio, Ph.D. University of Maryland-Baltimore Summary Despite repetitive attempts to set reasonable boundaries, foster understanding, and encourage empathy, family mem bers with borderline or narcissistic personality disorder traits often fail to comply, perpetuating a frustrating and upset ting cycle. This ongoing struggle frequently leads to feelings of depression, anger, and a desire to cut off the problematic relationship. Psychologists and mental health professionals will identify several levels of borderline and narcissistic per sonality disorder symptoms and understand their effects on family members. The presenter will introduce a theory asso ciating these disorders with a learning disability in emotional and interpersonal relationships. Participants will gain effec tive treatment strategies for helping family members navi gate the emotional and behavioral challenges posed by these disorders. This session will focus on two specific situations: adult children dealing with challenging parents and parents managing difficult adult children or strained relationships with adult children-in-law. Participants will examine key systemic and cognitive behavioral therapy principles defined and applied throughout the session. Additionally, partici pants will seek practical tools for clients or family members seeking solutions and be provided with loving, effective, and evidence-based strategies. Learning Objectives 1. Identify several severity levels of borderline and narcissis tic personality disorder symptoms and their effects on family members 2. Recognize a theory that associates borderline and narcis sistic personality disorder with a learning disability within emotional and interpersonal relationships 3. However, it can be challenging for licensed mental health professionals and medical professionals to get credentialed in every advanced treatment protocol, considering both the investment of time and resources needed. One of the most encouraging trends from the lit erature is some key findings that impact treatment for mul tiple disorders. By addressing these factors in treatment plans for those with PTSD, complex trauma, and prolonged grief disorder, as well as those with suicidal ideation, clini cians can supplement their existing treatment protocols with interventions that strengthen the mental, physical, and spiritual health of clients. Learning Objectives 1. Review research outlining key factors for resilience in clients with all mental health challenges, with particular focus on grief, trauma, and suicidal ideation 2.
