36 Christian Counseling Connection i If you have read about or watched a special on those struggling through the incredibly tough Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUDS/S) training to become a Navy SEAL, you may have heard about “swim buddies.” According to former SEAL, Jeff Boss, no matter where you go in whatever phase of SEAL training, you must always have a swim buddy within three feet. He writes, “‘Two is one and one is none’ is the rule, which applies to everything.” 1 I suspect very few of us, myself included, have been through anything remotely close to the massive challenges of SEAL training. However, you hear constantly from those special few operators who made it through how their “swim buddies” were often key to getting through each phase, and how those lessons learned in building teamwork and trust were not forgotten. They recall someone beside them, pushing them to do more, be more, and never give up. Who Are Those “ Swim Buddies ” God Put in Your Life? John Trent, Ph.D.
